What It Is

What Is PPR-CU Pipe? PP-R With an Antibacterial Copper Bore

Standard PP-R is already the workhorse of modern potable plumbing: corrosion-proof, scale-resistant, and heat-fusion welded into fully homogeneous, leak-free systems. PPR-CU takes that base and bonds a thin metallic copper layer to the inner wall of the pipe.

Standard PP-R (Random Copolymer Polypropylene) carries water reliably and joints homogeneously — but a plain plastic bore does nothing to control what grows inside it. PPR-CU bonds a thin metallic copper layer to the inner wall, and that copper surface delivers two things a plastic bore cannot:

  • Antibacterial action (oligodynamic effect): trace copper ions released at the wetted surface disrupt bacterial cell membranes, suppressing biofilm and microbial colonization inside the pipe — a passive, chemical-free hygiene mechanism that works continuously over the pipe’s service life.
  • Smooth, low-scale bore: the copper-lined inner wall stays clean and slick, minimizing scale build-up and preserving flow rate and water clarity in long-run potable systems.

The result is a pipe that carries water like PP-R but keeps the water pathway hygienic like copper — without copper’s corrosion, cost, and jointing complexity. Hitze produces PPR-CU across the full PP-R family range, OD 20 mm to OD 63 mm, to DIN 8077/78 and EN ISO 15874.

Where It Wins

Built for Potable, Hospital & Hotel Water Systems

PPR-CU is not a general-purpose upgrade — it earns its premium exactly where microbial control matters most.

Hospitals & Healthcare

Water systems where biofilm and waterborne pathogen risk (e.g. a Legionella management strategy) demand every hygienic advantage. The antibacterial copper bore is a passive line of defense inside the pipe itself.

Hotels & Hospitality

Long, intermittently-used risers and branch lines where stagnant water and scale are chronic problems. The smooth, low-scale bore protects guest-water quality and flow.

Residential Potable Hot & Cold

Homeowners and developers specifying a premium, hygiene-first potable system for kitchens and bathrooms, without switching material families.

Commercial & Institutional

Schools, care homes, and food-grade facilities where potable-safe, cleanable pipework is a spec requirement.

For any of these, PPR-CU installs on the same heat-fusion workflow and the same Hitze PP-R fittings your crews already use — so the hygiene upgrade adds no new tooling and no new failure modes at the joint.

The Copper Bore

How the Copper Layer Keeps the Water Pathway Hygienic

The hygiene benefit is not a coating claim — it is a metallic copper surface working passively against biofilm every hour the pipe is in service.

Copper has long been recognised for its oligodynamic effect: at the wetted surface, trace copper ions disrupt bacterial cell membranes, suppressing the biofilm that would otherwise colonise a plain plastic bore. Because the mechanism is the copper itself — not a chemical dose or an additive that leaches out — it keeps working continuously across the pipe’s whole service life.

  • Passive & chemical-free: nothing to top up, nothing to wear out — the copper bore is the hygiene system.
  • Low-scale, high-flow: the smooth copper-lined wall resists scale, protecting flow rate and water clarity on long risers and intermittently-used branches.
  • Potable hot & cold: engineered for drinking-water service, built to DIN 8077/78 and EN ISO 15874 and SKZ-tested.

Every PPR-CU pipe is built and verified against:

  • DIN 8077 / DIN 8078 — German dimensional and quality standards for PP-R pipe.
  • EN ISO 15874 — European standard for plastics piping systems for hot and cold water installations.
  • SKZ-tested — verification by the SKZ, Germany’s plastics testing and certification institute.

For potable and regional market access, Hitze holds and asserts the relevant certificate families — NSF/ANSI 61 (potable contact), WRAS, DVGW, cUPC/UPC, CE + DoP — across the applicable range. Certificate numbers are supplied in the Hitze Cert Pack on request (we assert the families; we never publish numbers we can’t evidence).

FAQ

PPR-CU Pipe — Frequently Asked Questions

How does the copper layer actually make PPR-CU antibacterial?
The inner copper layer works by the oligodynamic effect: trace copper ions at the wetted surface disrupt bacterial cell membranes, suppressing biofilm and microbial growth inside the bore. Combined with a smooth, low-scale wall, it keeps the water pathway hygienic across hot and cold potable service — a passive, chemical-free mechanism active over the pipe’s whole service life.
Is PPR-CU certified potable-safe for my market?
For the ImporterYes. PPR-CU is engineered for hygienic potable hot & cold water, built to DIN 8077/78 and EN ISO 15874 and SKZ-tested. Potable-contact families — NSF/ANSI 61, WRAS, DVGW, cUPC/UPC — are asserted for the applicable range; the specific certificate numbers for your market land in the Cert Pack, supplied on request for your compliance file.
What sizes and quantities can I order?
For the WholesalerPPR-CU runs the full PP-R family range, OD 20 mm to OD 63 mm, covering fixture branches through main risers. Supply is container-scale from a 118-country export base, and we’re sample-friendly with a low MOQ so you can qualify the line first. Exact SDR table and MOQ number are supplied on request (coming soon).
Can I sell PPR-CU under my own brand?
For the Private-Label BrandAbsolutely — Hitze is an ODM house. We print your brand on the pipe, packaging, and documentation, backed by German-standard DIN/EN ISO engineering. PPR-CU’s differentiated antibacterial positioning gives your catalog a genuine premium story that plain PP-R lines can’t match. Start a private-label inquiry to discuss artwork and lead times.
Can PPR-CU be heat-fusion welded like standard PPR?
Yes. The PP-R base is socket heat-fusion welded exactly like ordinary PP-R, using the same tooling and the same Hitze PP-R fittings, producing homogeneous leak-free joints. The copper layer sits inside the bore and does not change the installer’s fusion workflow — the hygiene upgrade adds zero jointing complexity.
